"Capriccio for Marimba & String Orchestra" is a lively work for 2-mallet marimba with string accompaniment that offers the soloist an opportunity to be technically challenged as well as melodically expressive. The listener will enjoy the rhythmic "Tresillo," a dance rhythm that will enhance the energetic excitement being displayed!A "Capriccio" (cah-pree-chee-oh) is an Italian musical work which translates as lively in character. This capriccio, accompanied by string orchestra is designed to challenge the featured instrumentalist to be technically proficient as well as expressive. The beginning should be played as notated, yet phrased effectively, with the downbeat of every fourth measure being the dynamic “peak” of each phrase, followed by a return (dim.) to the original marking to start the next phrase. The rhythmic derivation of the “Tresillo” ostinato in the accompaniment helps add to the energy the audience will hear. The bridge (central section) is meant to contrast with the opening, with more dynamic expression, highlighting the soloist’s melodic capabilities. The return to the A section should be measured with how bright the tempo will be during the codetta (the last tempo marking), which should be as quickly as can be effectively performed. Above all other considerations, the piece should be enjoyed by performers and listeners alike.
